About us

I love to make books.  For so many reasons.

Sometimes long after I’ve left the office, after everyone in my house has gone to bed, I pull my laptop out and search around inside it for something that would make a good book.  Just because they are such amazing objects and being able to make them is a very tiny kind of magic.  Give me a story, a manuscript, just a bundle of words really, and with what’s in my head, my laptop, a few programs, and sometimes a phone (though I scoff at such an antiquated tool)  I can turn it into a book.  A legitimized item.  A concrete product. Something that belongs on a shelf, something that you would curl up with in bed.

This wasn’t always true.  When I started this company six years ago, each book was a grind and risk.  I had only 60% of the know how, a credit card, and a bag to carry books around to bookstores.   I killed myself at every step and I scrounged my way to every sale, having to convince each and every person that I met that I was legitimate, not some self-publisher (the horror) or some boutique press.

Now my books are like birds. They flutter to me by chance, through friends, at bars, in coffee shops, and when I’m done with them they just fly off into the distribution chain. I never see most of them.  I just get a few for my records, a box for direct sales, and the rest go to some other place where they are stacked and kept and sent to bookstores when they’re ordered.

That’s what makes Warren Machine the future of publishing.  I could produce a book from the bottom of a well if I had internet access. I can publish, edit, print, and sell a book to bookstores all over the world without even picking up the phone.  And I do.  Not many.  Not yet.  But it’s just a matter of time.
